Unwelcome drones at the olympics. Someone is flying around practice files. When the players and coaches complained officials blamed it on overzealous fans.
In China they might just use a warehouse full of copper to secure a loan. Sometimes the same warehouse is used to secure multiple loans. Some western banks have people in China asking to see the friggin warehouses to make sure this huge pile of copper even exists. The shell game may be disrupted for a bit.
I do not believe the terrorists who crashed the planes in to the towers on 9/11/2001 were cowards for crashing the plane. I think they were cowards for targeting civilians.
I like listening to fiction podcasts. At least, I used to. Lately, I have no patients. If the story doesn’t grab me, I’m off to the news podcasts. Nuts. Maybe it is summer or just the crazy days of work.
There goes another set of earphones. One of the sides has just gone dead. Humph. I have other things to worry about.

Rubby Bink. What an awesome name. I heard this name on the Flying Squirrel’s (Red Panda) podcast. She was getting a birthday shout out. The reader mentioned he was going to steal that name for a story at some point. They also have Von Schlitz as a character name. How evil does that sound?
It turns out there are issues with forcing your populous to be stupid and controllable. Not the least of which is the lack of brilliant people to keep your controle machine going.
Ford first called his motorized vehicle a quadracycle. It ran on ethanol. It had a 2 stroke engine with about 4 horsepower. It would also not fit through the door of the garage. An ax fixed the design flaw.
Oh, I’m behind on this, but the U. S. beat China in the World Cup. USA! USA!!
I think Feedly is under attack again this morning (2014-06-17). It seems like my feeds are updating very slowly. I really hope whomever is doing this lives and dies broke.

Friday the thirteenth. Good thing I’m not superstitions.
We (Ted, Elle’s biological father) went to Elle’s school this morning for a little happy Father’s Day thing. I had a little pastry and a boiled egg. We talked and teased Elle for about 30 minutes. I’ll post the pictures here.
Iraq is going to fall. When it does it will be worse than it ever was under Saddam. The U. S. dismantled the Iraqi army on basically day one of our occupation. How many times do we have to learn the same lesson. If you are going to destroy a state, destroy it. Then take it as your own, or hand it to an ali. Don’t expect a defeated people to be able to take care of themselves.
I have never sought out ESPN before. I’m listening to the World Cup online while I work. Today Mexico and Australia are playing games I want to listen to. No, they are not playing each other today. The BBC refuses to put up the games on the radio service for some reason. ESPN is putting up the games. I like the commentary of the BBC better. What are you going to do?
Obama as unpopular as Bush. What difference does this make?
Nocebo: is the antonym to Placebo. A Nocebo is a harmless substance that causes a bad result. I learned this today on Dr Karl.
No lunch conversation. I shot a couple of clips for the vlog. McDonald's has peach pies at the moment. They are not bad. They are also 2 for a dollar.
Lots of bad stuff going on in Iraq. One of which is incompetence. It does sound like there is more to it than a small group of experienced fighters taking over an entire country.

Listing to the World cup. Right now, I’m listening to a bunch of pre-game stuff on BBC. I bet they will kill the3 feed as soon as the games start for rights BS. Seems like half the hype is the 3 or 4 hundred protesters who run around getting doused with tear gas.
First goal was an own-goal by Brazill. Ouch. They tied it pretty quick though.
It is strange to listen to the BBC report on “Armed Police”. All police in the U. S. are armed.
Iraq is being taken over by a group called ISIS. They are marching south and starting on Baghdad. People are telling the US to give in and do air strikes in the name of the current government. I hear there are some plans that include US boots on the ground again. Some say it is spreading from Syra.

Feedly was down this morning. I use feedly for my RSS aggregator. It works pretty well for YouTube and some other key sites. It was really annoying that I hadn't backed up my RSS list in quite a while. Feedly contains all my news and vlog links. I would love to have a backup, but there just isn't one. None of the other sites present the data in a way that is just links to the frigging pages. They want to present the pages to you in some weird way to hide where it is all coming from. Some want to make it look like a newspaper for goodness sake. Found a link describing the DDoS attack they were under.
Listening to some pregame commentary about the world cup on BBC. I can’t listen to the matches on BBC because of rights. I’m not a Brit or in Britton. Blows. I have to find it in Spanish somewhere. They don’t have the IP hangups so bad.

They came round and asked who needed a new chair at my office;. I had a pretty good chair so I said no thanks. Until I sat in one of the new chairs. They have Lumbar support. They are the screen seat and back design like I have at the house. Very supportive. Soooooo, I ... swapped my chair with one of the new ones in a conference room. it is still a pretty good chair, just not quite as good for all day sitting. it was a self preservation call.
The Italians are going to include prostituti9o0n and illegal drug sales in their future calculations. They will even refigure past years. This is apparently a European rule change. I’m not sure what to think about this. It is money changing hands. The amounts are significant.

Phone Company
Sprint is buying T-Mobile. I’ve looked at Sprint plans and found them lacking. Well, found the extremely expensive. I think they are on par with Verizon. I will go back to Virgin or try Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart uses T-Mobile for the moment, but that will obviously change. Nat will be pissed. She hated Virgin. I’ll give her a stipend for her and Elle every month for phones and go from there.
I am so friggin sick of companies getting bought out that I use. I must have a talent for picking the phone company that gets bought out. It is always worse after the buyout.
In the nineties, my savings and loan needed to get bought out. I got screwed then too. It seemed to me at the time the new bank didn’t want my business. I ended up moving to some other financial institution.
These companies seem to think I’m sitting on a big pile of cash, pointing at them and laughing. They act like I refuse to part with it for services rendered. No, I just straight up cannot afford their prices. I have no choice in the matter. Very little choice anyway. I’ll have to go back to paying every month.

Some of the lab machines at work just plane stop talking to the network. You can’t log in externally nor will let let you log in as anyone other than straight up root at the console. This is really annoying because it happened when the new parent company made us switch to their kind of login structure. They said it is more secure, but I’m just not sure. Just have to go hold in the power button and wait. That seems to fix it, but that kills anything you had running on the box of course.

Why Hollywood has not made a Tiananmen movie. Well, duh. It is all about the dollar bills.
They constantly bitch about house prices in Britain. It is their own fault. There are whole cities that were mining communities that are valued at zero because they are more trouble to tear down and clean up than they will ever be worth. Zoning, for lack of a better word, prevents most building of new homes.
“The internet told me to!” Battle cry of the young developer.
There is a backlash or reversion going on in our office. People are getting smaller and smaller phones. The trend is to find a screen size that fits you. Several people who had massive phones are now sporting postage stamp models.

The average age of cars on the road in the U. S. is 11.4 years. Wow. I would have guessed something under 10 for sure. It has recently gone higher. Our car is about to hit 10 years. Of course, we have a Corolla. That is like cheating for longevity.
You pronounce the “g” twice in longevity. I say it a bit like “long” “jevity”. Am I nuts?

Righteous indignation - Getting pissed off at being oppressed. Not just holding it in, but using some wrong as justification for screaming at someone. Typically this phrase is only used when try to tell someone they are getting upset over trivial bullshit, or telling someone they are on the “wrong” side of an argument.
I want to be the guy who pays off his friend’s houses when he wins the lottery. I know I would probably skip town with the cash (family in tow) and not look back except in the occasion of swooping in to help someone in real need and to punish those dicks I could.

One of the guys at work got a t-shirt that says “knock knock knock PENNY!” for three rows. This follows me warring one that said “I’m not insane. My mother had me tested.” The shirt caused a philosophical discussion on just how society judges sanity. Thanks Nat. Awesome t-shirt find.

Got lunch at McDonalds. Ate on the roof of the parking garage (7th floor) I only had 2 $1 chicken sandwiches. I thought I was going to bust. I’ve noticed my stomach shrinking lately. Not sure if this is aging, or me trying not to be a glutton. Either way, I need to watch my intake and make sure I’m getting a well rounded diet.
BOINC keeps dying. I shouldn’t be surprised. this is an ancient version that only runs in 32 bit. it is what I need to run on my work system. It is allowed on my work system as long as I use my work’s project for at least part of my process time.
I’ve been very brain dead lately. I do not have the juice to produce. I have not made vlog entries. I have not made blog entries. I have not done many posts of pics or even tweets. It is worse than laziness. I’m just plain pooped.
Watch Someone Travel
Watching a friend of mine in the U. K. travel around. He turned on a service that lets his Facebook friends watch him travel around. You get a map, satellite and everything. Not sure I could do this. It feels a bit nuts. I may give it a try though. Just for grins.
He pulled in to a hotel. He then walked from the car to the door of the hotel. He then walked back to the car. All these scenarios go through my head. He forgot something. He handed one load off to someone and went back for another. He needed to move the car. No idea. I’m intrigued.

Headlines
The difference between news outlets. Read the following headlines and then think about which news outlet said them.
Man arrested after rushing Brad Pitt at 'Maleficent' premiere - Fox News
Red Carpet Prankster Attacks Brad Pitt at 'Maleficent' Premiere - ABC News
Fox news starts with the result. The other starts with the action. This shows different ways of approaching the news altogether.
These were found on Google News by the way.
Lies, damned lies and statistics. The walk in this morning was relatively dry. Considering all the rain we have had recently, that is a wondrous thing. I have to admit that the recent rain storms have not caught me in the morning. Normally that is the time I get nailed. I’m out in the open. I’ve been walking between the drops I suppose.
APM did a story on all the gadgets that have come and gone trying to help educate kids. They went through all kinds of things that required levers and buttons to be pushed. They all failed. TV didn’t really help.
To learn is to be stressed out, made to feel stupid or inadequate, and overcoming this by gaming the system in your favor. This is true in math, history, language, writing, pouring concrete, driving a vehicle, flying a spaceship, not getting in a war with your neighbors and every other activity humans find themselves trudging through on a daily basis.
I say that to learn is to be humiliated. That is the way I felt in school anyway. If you submit to the humiliation, you get through school much easier.
Computer interfaces are just the opposite. I work for a company that deals with computer interfaces every day. The interfaces change via programming every day in order to allow humans not to have to learn anything. This is the same for stone tablets and iPads. Eventually, they get too easy to use. The things you are trying to teach become too easy. 2+2 is 4, No matter how many times you ask that question or how you present it to a human, they have to comprehend numbers in order to learn it.

The walk in this morning was wet. Fortunately, I made it to the bus stop and indeed on the bus before the sky opened up. Just. I’m not kidding the drops were tinkling on the windshield as I stepped on the bus. The entire world is a huge blob of green for the rest of the day. Just from the door of the bus to the door of the building, I got wet even with a poncho on.
Has a guy on the bus ask me where I got my poncho. I told him Academy because I know he can track it down there or at the almighty Wal-Mart. I really bought this one online. A huge mistake. I do not like the design and the lack of length. The corners are over rounded which just equates in to a lack of coverage.
Memorial day is a day off in the UK. They call it a bank holiday. Not sure what that means beyond the banks being closed.
There was no coffee in the cubby where the coffee snobs (me and a bunch of others make our coffee. I used normal coffee from the lunch room. The tiny bottle of milk I purchased last week had gone rotten. So, I stole a bit from someone else. I do feel a bit bad about that. It isn’t like I have a lock on my bottle. We are not supposed to do this. Still, I’ll fess up if caught.
I was listening to a radio show (via podcast) all about science when they had a story come up that started in 1978. They went around the room asking who was alive in 1978. One of the PhDs in the room had been alive in 1978. It was suitably depressing.
I’m listening to a book from the 1960s. It is pretty good, but there is definitely something different about how it is written. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but the story is told more though what people say than narrated by some invisible observer. Maybe that is just this book. The story is about international intrigue. Things were different before the internet put us all on the same block.
Food inflation. Yes, your wallet hurts for a reason.

Working a half day today. Working it from home. Strange feeling. Getting stuff done though. A few technical difficulties. The VPN client is not foolproof.
There are several stories floating about the internet talking about solar powered roads. I’m all for it, but I think things like road grime and snow will hamper efforts a bit. These things can be overcome. I also fear the power and hardware will be repurposed occasionally for things other than their original target.
