Sore ankle
Justice, or apology?
| President Obama vowed to punish those responsible for the deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. "We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done," he said. GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney also condemned the attack on the consulate in Libya and repeated his criticism of the Obama administration's response to the earlier attack on the U.S. Embassy in Egypt, calling an embassy statement "akin to an apology" that was "disgraceful."

I haven’t heard the whole statement from Obama. I have heard Obama apologize for the U. S. several times. I’ve seen him bow before dictators and punish our allies for standing up for themselves.

Al Qaeda gets it Mr President. (emphasis mine)
| The attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens was planned by attackers who used the protest outside the consulate as a diversion, U.S. sources say. The sources could not say whether the attackers instigated the protest or merely took advantage of it, and they say they don't believe Stevens was specifically targeted. Stevens and three other Americans suffocated trying to escape a fire after a grenade was thrown into the building, a senior U.S. official said. London terror analysts speculated that Stevens was the victim of a targeted al Qaeda revenge attack. The assault "came to avenge the death of Abu Yaya al-Libi, al Qaeda's second in command killed a few months ago," the analysts said.

Economics and the EU
Greece is trying to bill Germany for damages done during World War II. They are that desperate for money I suppose. This is serious, yet I cannot stop giggling about it. A judge is making a decision soon to decide whether the constitution in Germany allows it to bail out other countries directly. I guess as opposed to doing it though Brussels and the EU.
The only choices I see are A) bail out Greece entirely or B) let Greece fail as a state, then go in and clean up the mess. Either way really sucks. Either way is a loss on the face of Europe as an entity.
German people do not want to hand Greece a blank check. No one does. Things have not changed there. Once Greece is off the top of the list of cluster fucks, then comes Spain and other countries. Greece is being treated like a guinea pig for this whole EU thing. Is it even possible to throw a country out of Europe? Heck, even France is in real fiscal trouble.
One funny thing coming out of all this is to listen to very high level government officials sound like middle school children when confronting one another on the radio talk shows. They talk over each other and have to be told to stop interrupting. I have a feeling that some of them have been quietly cut off in some of the interviews. At least it is entertaining.

Iran has doubled the number of centrifuges since this whole inspection request thing has happened. This from NPR radio. The IAEA is the one complaining that diplomacy is not working and the only answer coming out of the world stage is more diplomacy. Isn’t that the definition of insanity?
This guy came on NPR and spoke for a solid fifteen minutes about all the unfair agreements that the world wants Iran to agree to. They claim the whole effort is to provide nuclear fuel for power after the oil runs out in the next decade or two. Yet, no one is buying it. The Iran program builds.

My gout is acting up big time today. I’m limping like a pro. They are calling me “Hobble Along Kelly” at work. Nat was kind enough to give me a ride in this morning. I may not have been able to make it without her.
I tried to shoot a timelapse this morning at work. I ended up just shooting a video and I’ll play with it later. That Toshiba has a time lapse setting somewhere. I couldn’t find it. I needed to not be in the room I was in for very long. I was using an empty office so the camera wouldn’t freak anyone out. It is supposed to rain today. You will find the video on the blog if it didn’t suck.
Baby asperen are 80mg. Low dose adult asperen are 81mg and up. I know this because those are the labels and descriptions of two bottles of asperen I have at the house.

U. S. Embassy overrun in Cairo
| Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo today and hauled down its U.S. flags, replacing them with black flags with Islamic emblems. The incident prompted U.S. security guards to fire off a volley of warning shots as a large crowd gathered outside, apparently upset about the production of a Dutch film thought to insult the prophet Mohammed, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene. An Embassy operator told CNN that the facility had been cleared of diplomatic personnel earlier in the day, ahead of the apparent threat, while Egyptian riot police were called to help secure the Embassy walls.

’m going to have to start taking the gout medicine. My ankle hurts today. I wonder if my wrist is sore because of overuse or if it is gout. My back, don’t get me started on my back. I’m old. I have been avoiding a real every day for the rest of my life medicine for my whole life. It may be time.
I tend not to put up blog entries on the weekend. I just want to pass out on the weekends and accomplish nothing. This is a bad thing. I want to be the guy who gets cool stuff done on the weekend. At least, I want to be the guy who gets something done on the weekends. Not sure what will motivate me to get all the chores done. What is that magic device?
Adam came by today and gave me some of his special coffee. He brings up awesome coffee to work. I almost hate it when he does this because it ruins me for the swill we have in the lunchroom. Bridges
I used to listen to Science Friday on NPR religiously. Now, I find myself skipping whole stories these days. They keep interviewing famous science writers who write fiction with some science in it. They talk about video pics of the week on their radio show. This was interesting a million years ago, but is just out of place now it seems.
Today they had a guy on who spoke about civil engineering. He was supposed to come on and scream bloody murder about how dangerous our infrastructure has become. He was intelligent, informative and spouted the facts. His big thing was “keep up the maintenance on bridges.” Ira seemed to want a controversy or outrage.
There are something like eight thousand bridges designed to fail without redundancy. The number of inspections is down. There was a collapse recently outside of Minneapolis. This collapse was what kicked off the story. The real story in my opinion was when you stop spending money on inspections and maintenance, your shit falls apart and takes anyone nearby down with it.
The gasoline tax was originally supposed to be used exclusively for infrastructure. We, it isn’t. Politicians don’t want to repair old things. Politicians want to open a new road. This makes for much better photo ops. It is up to the voters to remember how politicians voted when a tragedy happens. Sad.

I still nearly turned this show off when they took a caler. This i something that I have a hard time with and I don’t even know why. I hate it when news shows accept calls on the air from just barely screened people. I do not understand what my problem with this is.

Wow, I’m sick of hearing about politics. Every time I hear or see anything about politics these days I want to just change the channel. I firmly believe that no one will fix the issue. It doesn’t matter who wins the presidency. This whole focus on the presidency is a distraction. It is a bit of fluff.
People scream about going green and then complain about the noise of the wind turbines and how ugly solar panels are. It will just never balance out. Things change too quickly these days for things to find equilibrium. Make prettier solar panels. Make quieter wind turbines. Think camouflage. Think placement (hiding things) Innovate, overcome, shut up. I feel the same way about green and climate change.
Some estimates say 95% of cotton produced in the U. S. goes overseas. I believe it. It was a story about immigration and labor in the U. S.. The story was about letting people be Americans. What I took away from the story is that the U. S. died a while ago. We are living on her corpse. I’m starting to believe that it will not matter who wins the next election. It does not matter how hard the people fight for freedom. The decisions have been made.

Nothing noteworthy happened on today’s commute to work. This is, it seems, noteworthy.
Drama must come easy to some people. The people who I know who are dramatic are not good actors. Most of the people I know who can act are dramatic. These two statements do not compute. Thus, there must not be a correlation between drama and drama.
I’m experimenting with some new audiocasts. The world is chucked full of lousy podcasts that will fade the minute I start listening.
No lunch conversation stuff today. We talked shop the whole time. I wouldn’t put that up even if it were not proprietary and, as it happens preliminary (due to change) information. Still, it was kind of fun watching the developers cringe at what is really good news only because it is a change.

I walked in the door last night after work, watched three videos on YouTube, ate a piece of apple pie and passed out. I slept straight through to this morning. I dreamed about work. I had to get up and pee twice I think. Once at 10:00 straight up and the other at 3:30. Just what you wanted to know I’m sure.
Amazon is catching hell about tax exemption all over the world. It turns out that the UK is griping about some kind of tax that Amazon is not paying. The online retailers are really a target for municipalities as well. Everyone wants a slice of the pie.
Kickstarter is a web page where good ideas can raise money to make a product or just promote a good cause. It is also a good place for patent trolls to get ideas. Patent trolls are people who patent ideas and then sit on them and wait for someone to come along and try to make the product or service.

The new employer culture change
Our company is getting snapped up by a much larger company. This has been in the news. Nothing new here. I have some comments about the changes in culture that we are going through.
Well, they took my photo for my brand new ID badge. Our old badges were just RFID devices that let us in the door and clocked us in and out. We are going to have to wear ID badges. That is going to be culture shock for a bunch of people here. I had to at my last job. It is annoying to be legally blind and everyone expects you to read their name off their badge. Then there are the times people who have names that I couldn’t pronounce on a bet show up.
New people are overrunning the place. This is new. There was a village feeling at our company. We really only have one location with a few people who are remote. That is changing by miles. I have met every single person at this company at least once. I’m the IT guy. I created their account. I got them a system. I fix broken stuff. Many people at the company had this kind of contact with most if not all of the company. We hang out together. We party and play in bands together. Now there will be more people from the other company working here than original people. This is awesome from a getting work done standpoint, but that village feel is out the window.
Something else we are going to have to get used to is last name first. My Android phone refuses to list people last name first. Google Mail refuses to list people last name first. Up to now just about everything at this company was listed first name first. Everything at the new company is going to be last name first. I’ll get used to it. I prefer last name first.

Not by any measure. I really can’t wait to know what this place (or where ever we are) feels like in three years. Ustream Hugo Awards debacle
Ustream is a service where people can put up live and not so live events in video format on the internet. Ustream got the Hugo Awards contract. Right in the middle of the broadcast, the stream cut out because Ustream’s bots killed it due to copyright infringement. They blamed a third party company. Basically, these people were blocked for violating their own copyright.
The idea of automatically detecting and killing copyrighted material is flawed. There is no appeals process. There is no court to defend yourself in. The quickest way to get a YouTube video pulled is to complain that it violates someone’s copyright.
The system is broken. I cannot make money on my YouTube videos for two reasons. No one is watching and every one of my videos is flagged for copyright infringement. There is no copyright infringement going on. Still, I’m not able to participate because perhaps my voice sounds too much like some TV show or something. I cannot get an answer from YouTube. I do not want to loose my account so I do not monetize.
The idea of automatically detecting and killing copyrighted material is flawed. There is no appeals process. There is no court to defend yourself in. The quickest way to get a YouTube video pulled is to complain that it violates someone’s copyright.
The system is broken. I cannot make money on my YouTube videos for two reasons. No one is watching and every one of my videos is flagged for copyright infringement. There is no copyright infringement going on. Still, I’m not able to participate because perhaps my voice sounds too much like some TV show or something. I cannot get an answer from YouTube. I do not want to loose my account so I do not monetize.

Natalie was nearly hit this morning. She was making a left from the street in front of my work to on toe Westheimer. Someone blew through the light and nearly t-boned her. If she hadn't slipped off the gas when she started across the intersection, she would have been hit by someone who was doing about seventy running the light. She was pretty shaken up, understandably.
There is a minor blip in house sales numbers and people flip out. They start borrowing against their houses again and buy a car. Apparently the car market has had a boom over this summer. This must be why a couple friends of mine have found good quality 2005 to 2008 era cars in the used market.

This last Sunday was Father’s day in Australia.

All the kids are back in school now. HISD I believe was the last holdout. Nat gave me a ride in this morning and we could tell there was a huge difference even from last week. If it were not for Elle attending a school, Nat would not need to hit the morning traffic. I commute in the morning outside the worst of it.
Skipping lunch today. I felt so bad this morning, I nearly didn’t come in. I had been up several times over night with acid reflux. If Nat hadn’t offered to give me a ride, I might not have come in. By the time lunch rolled around, I was just not in the mood to eat. What did not help is the sheer amount of vacation time I’m going to leave on the table at the end of the year. Sad, but who cares. I don’t take vacations anyway.
I just spent 5 minutes fighting a table in a Google Drive document that was splitting a table funny. A large cell had a line running down the middle horizontally. It wouldn’t go away. When I recreated the cell and put the data i, the frigging line showed up again. It was maddening. It was a page break. BAH!

A friend’s party

A buddy of mine had a “new grill party” party last night. He got this funky new grill that looks like some kind of
dinosaur egg. It is huge, but doesn’t look like it in the pictures. I’m not sure what the advantage is with this grill, but the steaks were awesome.
Everything was awesome. Even the pies that Nat and I got at Fiesta were awesome. The kids were awesome (until bed time). The grownups were awesome. I didn’t even know most of the people there and had a great time.
I learned about the party on Friday I think. Maybe it was Saturday. The part was on Monday afternoon. Monday was Labor Day on the U. S. and our company gets the day off. We don’t get many days off so we tend to make the best of them as they come along.
Adam and Laurie’s little girl loved pulling on my beard. Fortunately, it is short so she could not get a real hand old. She giggled and smiled and pulled. Nat even commented that she was quite privileged because I don’t typically go out of my way to hld babies. I’m afraid of breaking them. That little girl tried to climb up my head. Laurie said this is her thing. She is going to be an early walker.
Over the evening, I had two and a half glasses of wine. I ate a full steak. A great steak. Between these two things, I expected to have a hangover, yes, I’m that much of a light weight. I also expected a gout attack. I didn’t have the former and have not yet felt the latter. I’m hoping to skip both and just call it a win. I haven’t had that much fun in a long time.

Lunch conversation
I basically experienced two different groups of people on my lunch break today. The first group was of older engineers discussing books and a few weekend bullets. The other was the rest of the IT department and a big-whig who happened by. It wound up being an informative lunch on both ends.
On a side note, there was not one female I spoke with either at work or at McDonalds my entire lunch time. That is at least a little out of the norm.

I got passed by a truck this morning with a motor on a device running in the bed. It had a blinking yellow light on the back. It must have been spraying for mosquitos. I didn’t smell anything. I wonder if they switched the pump into neutral as they passed me. I was using the flashlight so I suppose, I stick out like a bekin. A second truck went by a bit later with a blinking yellow light, but no generator kind of sound coming out of the back.
Who has a patent on saying “um” in the middle of a sentence? Perhaps there are other situations like this where something obvious happens subconsciously that is still available to copyright. Then, the owner can extort a pretty good living off being an asshole. I’m trying to think of an example. I cannot be the first person to think of this.
Only 45% of people say that owning a home is important to be considered middle class. This is a huge difference from just ten or so years ago. Apparently people say a steady job is the main road into the middle class. - NPR story (yes, I listen to NPR and Mark Lavin)
Some restaurants were open last week after the hurricane. You can’t keep those folks down for long. The number of bars open through the storm and have still not closed was not mentioned.
It cracks me up how each paragraph of my notes section on this blog get smaller as I go. It worries me sometimes. “I’m not saying what I should.” “I have less and less to say as I go.” “I just get lazy!” Then I stop and just blow it off. If I feel like putting in more than one paragraph on a subject, the rule is to break it out into it’s own blog entry. ... Oops. This paragraph ran a bit long, but not worth of being split. So much for the trend. I have to admit that if I don’t feel like breaking something out to a separate entry, I’ll let the single paragraph drag out a bit.
Apple is attempting to copyright the word “Podcast”. I hate the idea of this so I went in to my Google Reader and renamed the folder “Podcasts” to “Audiocasts”. It kind of freaked out Google Reader. It took a bit for the audiocasts to start loading properly. Things kind of went out of sync for a while. They did appear to catch up.
Google Drive (document editor) will not let me link a picture. Instead, it downloads the pic and puts it in my document. That is all well and good, but when I try to post the entry, that will not work. Thus, I must do the same thing with online photos that I do with online videos. That is, copy and paste the code straight in as HTML when I’m constructing the post on Blogger. There must be an easier way. Too bad I can’t afford it.
One of the audiocasts I listen to is in one of the big cities in Australia. These guys live in the city and use the bus and “tram” which I believe is some kind of light rail. They have never said a kind word about it. Nothing but complaints. The cost, the people, the company all catch hell. They even complain about the advertisements. I want to write in and dare them to find some redeeming feature and put it up in the audio show.
Got my spare batteries for the Canon Elph 110. They fit the charger and started charging. I’m sure I’ll let you know my results.
