I have some friends who are working on a peer to peer hardware solution. I think this software idea works much better because  everyone already has the hardware in their pocket.  The article is correct that if the protesters can use it, the government can listen in. The simple fact is they could cut it off if they chose to do so, thus the fact it is still available should tell us something about how secure it is.
