String Theory
I was reading this article on NYT hoping for something new, some hint of consolidation. What did I get. Five web pages full of squabbling scientists and indifferent journalists.
Some one needs to solve some fundamental problem. We need some new brilliant leap forward somewhere. Something positively exciting has got to come about soon. The last thing that had this feel was the X-Prize. This doesn't affect every one on a daily basis. I'm talking a replacement for cars, or the TV, or the washing machine or something fundamental to our lives every day. We wake to a world where we do the same thing all the time. We need something to change everything all at once. Something as basic as the phone, or the automobile, or electricity, or indoor plumbing. Think of the world before any of those things. It is considered a "different time". People haven't changed much in the last 150,000 years according to fossils. Only the technology has changed. It is time for another one of these changes.
I suggest that the Internet is one of these fundamental changes.

Cell Phones
Video compression
Those things that tell you where you are (I can't believe I forgot the name)
Satellite TV
Low cost broadband
Video on Demand
Teleconfrencing
Airbags
High yield crops
Hydroponics

All these things are world changing technologies. Throw in all the medical advances they have monthly and you can probably triple that list.

I think we are just jaded about technology. Its happening so fast that new technologies are expected.
